Katherine and surrounds

Sights

Nitmiluk Gorge

Learn more

The Nitmiluk (formerly Katherine) Gorge is one of the best sights of the region - only a short drive from Katherine town.  There are several options for seeing the gorge, including canoeing, walking or boating.  The Nabilil Dreaming Sunset Dinner Tour is particularly recommended.

Katherine Hot Springs

Learn more

Katherine Hot Springs are thermal hot springs that run through Katherine town.  They are warm and inviting, particularly if you go early in the morning before everyone else gets there.  There is some good coffee and sandwiches at the top of the springs for breakfast.

Edith Falls

Learn more

Every drive to Katherine should involve a stop at Edith Falls.  It is a short drive off the Stuart Highway, but well worth while.  Walk to the upper pool and prepare yourself for a dip in the pure, cool waters.  Whatever you do, make sure you get in the water.   The walk over the bridge will feel long but stay with it and wear runners if you can (though things are usually fine as well).

Elsey National Park

Visit site

Elsey National Park boasts two hot springs - Bitter Springs and Mataranka.  At 1.5 hours from Katherine, you should make it a day and go to both.  Bring a pool noodle to assist with your floating.  The water is warm and just perfect.  If you have read "We of the Never Never" you will recognize this place!

Cutta Cutta Caves

Learn more

About half an hour out of Katherine, the Cutta Cutta Caves are worth a look. Inside the caves you may see sparkling limestone formations of stalactites and stalagmites and five different species of bats including the rare ghost and leaf-nosed bats.

Accommodation

Gorge View Bush Retreat

Learn more

This is our recommendation for accommodation in Katherine.  It is out near the gorge and a convenient place to sight see from.  There are some very comfortable glamping options as well as more budget friendly cabins.

Cicada Lodge

Learn more

Cicada Lodge is premium accommodation at the Nitmiluk Gorge.  It is an exceptional stay with award winning dining.  It will cost you a pretty penny though and you will need to book months in advance.

Nitmiluk Cabins

Learn more

Nitmiluk Cabins is another option for accommodation at the gorge.  They are fine, but if you were thinking of staying at the gorge camping will be more fun and better value for money.

Knott's Crossing Resort

Learn more

Knott's Crossing is probably the accommodation option of choice in Katherine town.  There are plenty of different options in a fairly quiet part of town.

Food

The Black Russian Caravan Bar

Learn more

A food truck worth noting, the Black Russian Caravan Bar does a good coffee, delicious pastry and an impressive toastie.  Outside of the information centre, it is a place worth going for a bite.

Regent Court Chinese Restaurant

Should a Chinese restaurant in an outback Australian town be delicious?  Probably not - and yet Regent Court does not disappoint.
